No running today.  I did some core work - Pilates and some Achilles exercises that I have been trying to stabilize and strengthen.  Tempo work tomorrow.  It would be nice to track X-training above.  Is there a way?

After you log in, go to 'Change Logging Template' on the selection tree. There is one calleed jk_dan_crosstrain that you can use.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jan 09, 2008 at 17:42:20

At this stage of your training tempo work should not be done yet. You should run easy and keep increasing the daily mileage until running 6 miles a day 6 days a week becomes a norm. After that, if you want to run a good 5 K, tempos can be done. If the focus is the marathon, keep increasing the mileage until it is 10 a day, and once you get there, do tempos.

From Dave on Wed, Jan 09, 2008 at 18:35:14

I'm 6 weeks into the FIRST training plan (Furman Institute of Running) 3 day + cross training schedule. day 1 - speed work of 400, 800, 1200 or 1600, day 2 - Tempo Miles, day 3 - longer miles at :30 - :60 over PMP. I have talked with several runners that have had great experience with this program. I have used the 6 days at 6 - 10 miles with injury challenges. So far on this program, I'm doing very well, without injuries.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jan 10, 2008 at 20:17:23

Did you do speed work when running 6 days a week 6 miles a day? And did you start doing it right away from zero? If yes, that would explain the injuries.

How fast is the fastest runner that has had a great experience with this program, and how fast was he before he tried it?

The 6 days a week program with the focus on building a solid aerobic base first has produced improvements of 30 minutes to 1 hour in the marathon times in people on this blog who were doing something similar to what you are doing now. It has also produced a couple of Olympic Trials qualifiers on this blog, as well as a good number sub-2:30 marathoners. It is practiced in some form by every runner I ever heard of that ran under 2:40, and recommended by every coach that has ever raised a world-class marathoner.

From 330dave on Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 08:52:18

1st runner increased by :20 to get a 3:10 and another inproved by :30 to get a 3:20. I have generally used speed interval training at the track beginning at about week 12 or 16 out per Galloway's first book. I've never used high intensity tempo training very much, only on days when a training run was going quite well and then I'd pick it up.

I'm not looking for an easy solution here, but I do need to increase my speed work with interval training and tempo runs. I'll be running on the cross training days in most cases, so I'll be doing as you recommend above.

I do have a solid base. I've been running very seriously for almost 15 years without any major lapses of inactivity.

My goal is 3:30 marathon. I ran this pace about 7 or 8 years ago in St. Geo. Want to do it again to qualify of course.

thanks for your interest.

Cold and icy again.  Wanted to do 5 at PMP, but had some back spasms beginning at mile 3 of the PMP - had to quit.  It felt like a muscle tensed up and pressed against the nerve in low to mid part of back.  Can still feel muscle tightness.  maybe it was from running on an occasional ice/snow patch and could not relax while running.

From 330dave on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 00:15:14

No. I've regularly had a somewhat sensitive back, but a little lower than this time. I think it was just from being tense from running in the cold and icy, snowy conditions. I'm sure I'll be fine tomorrow on my 15 mile run.

Nice running Dave! How is your back?

From Dave on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 11:02:02

My back feels a lot better. No problems at all on Sat. My Sleep Number Bed has helped it. I firmed up my bed for a few nights and it feels good. Then when it feels good, I soften back up for a more comfy sleep. This is an advertisement!!

I'm slowly picking up the miles. Need to extend my easy run day a little from 4 to 6 miles. I'm looking forward to losing this snow. Speed work and Tempo training are going quite well.

Good work Dave. What is the longest tempo run your training plan calls for prior to the marathon?

From Dave on Wed, Feb 20, 2008 at 17:02:13

Can't recall for sure - probably 5 or 6 miles. Speeds slow down a little at the higher miles though. I'll look and respond tomorrow.

From Dave on Thu, Feb 21, 2008 at 14:55:36

Cal,

The Tempo runs are up to 10 miles, although the 10 mile run is at PMP. 8 miles are at :15 under PMP, 6 miles are at :30 under PMP, and 4 miles are at :45 under PMP.

Nice job on those quarters!

From Dave on Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 12:07:49

Thanks for keeping an eye on my runs. This FIRST program is interesting. I'm doing okay on the interval and tempo runs. The long runs have been difficult...they are run faster than normal long runs. Thsi week 18 at MPM+:30, next week 20 at MPM+:30, then 20 at MPM+:15, then a few weeks later 20 at MPM.

We'll see.

I'm actually hoping to get into good shape by Ogden then use the same program to prepare for SG.

We should do a Saturday run down big/little mountain.

From Cal on Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 12:38:20

Galloway wouldn't approve of those long run paces... of course, he'd also tell you to take a walk break each mile too, so what does he know!

Those emigration runs are pretty fun. There's a 10 mile race that comes down that canyon on April 5th.

Good run Dave. Have you ever used McMillan's running calculator? You're tempo pace is right on for a 3:30 marathon target.

http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

From Dave on Wed, Mar 19, 2008 at 15:09:40

Thanks Cal. I have referenced McMillan's calculator in the past. I'll take a look again. I'm following the FIRST program to a tee. I needed a 7:29 pace today, but did a little better with some down hill grades along the way.

Thanks for for keeping an eye on me.

Good run Dave. What happened during that 8:50? All the other miles were pretty consistent.

From Dave on Wed, Mar 26, 2008 at 11:33:21

Thanks Cal.

Probably two things happened:

1. I lost focus and was down to 8:30

2. Which led to a loss of momentum and confidence.

I need to do more core work. When my back goes, then my legs tighten up, I loose the fluidity of my gait and ......

Again - thanks for keeping an eye on my workouts!!

5K Run for the Cure : 21:42

1 mile cool down

Felt good about the 5K.  Started out a little fast with a 6:40 first mile, 7:00 second mile. Almost gave up and walked at mile 2, 7:20 3rd mile, but hung in there and finished pretty strong - finished with a strong .1 mile.  Not very psychologically strong sometimes.  My weekly speed and tempo work seemed to have helped though.

It was a good confidence booster for the marathon next week.  Still not sure about running it though.  May see if I can opt out and run the 1/2.  didn't get into St. Geo.:(.  I think I'll focus on some shorter runs and spend the year strengthening my running strength and core.  Thats probably best anyway,

Good job on your 5K. That's a bummer about St. George. Maybe you should consider Logan?

From terry on Sun, May 11, 2008 at 08:28:02

Good job on the 5K. It's always temping to run the 1st mile fast. Way to hang on.

Ran the Ogden 1/2

By mile 5, I was feeling a bit tired.  Slowed down from there for a personal worst 1/2 of 1:50.  Real glad I did not run the full.

I haven't been able to put in the miles that I have needed.  Beautiful morning!!

Go in and edit your Ogden 1/2 run run and check the race box so the entry shows up with a red line of race info at the top.

Now that you've run your worst 1/2 you have a time to improve upon. Hope to see you at a race some time.

From 330dave on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 16:32:16

Done. thanks for the encouragement. I'll run a better 1/2 sometime this summer!! Are you going to be running the Provo 1/2?

From Terry on Tue, May 20, 2008 at 18:33:31

I'm planning on running the Provo 1/2 if my schedule doesn't get changed by the boss.

Good to see you're back online.

When are you planning to go after your 3:30 marathon? Logan?

From 330dave on Tue, Jun 03, 2008 at 18:03:59

No, not Logan. Probably another year. Since I've cut back on my miles, my back is feeling much better. I'm going to do some interval, tempo, medium distance with cross training (swimming) to run a respectable 10k. No marathons this year. I'll probably wait until I lottery into SG again.

Hope you are doing well.

Nice tempo run. Are you swimming so you can do a triathalon?

From 330dave on Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 12:52:39

No, not really. Running has worn my body down some and I'm just truing to get soe increased core and upper body strength back. Feels good so far. I've done it before and have had good results. I'm not marathoning this year so thought I would strengthen up in prep for another year when I get into SG.

sore hamstirng at beginning, continued.  at mile 4 it seized/cramped up - had to walk in....no 10k on 24th :(......

not sure what happened.  I swam yesterday and did a kick work on my back - 1st time I have done this - felt something - twinge - initially.   I'm sure it will mend quickly, but not in 2 days.
